Computer cartography

In spite of massive advancement in the area of geographic information systems, which have provided us with more accurate and accomplished view of the space surrounding us, classical maps have retained their position as the most usual form of landscape projections. Maps belong among the basic aids in numerous fields of human activities. Neither the work of many specialists nor the traveling for holidays could be imaginable without the map. Maps creation is considered to be the major activity of ESPRIT, limited company, in Banská Štiavnica. Maps are prepared as the separate publications as well as the part of other projects – representing the visualization of the achieved results. From the editing point of view, maps are prepared in the form of separate map sheets, books of the atlas type or in the digital form as digital maps or parts of geographic information systems. Our map producing and editing team has acquired a wide range of experience from working on hundreds of maps and map publications for both the Slovak and foreign clientele.

The foundation for the map preparation is a field survey, the Earth remote sensing data processing, archive documents and different types of databases. Branches of cartographic works include creation of an identification key, designing of a geographic composition of a map, complex creation of a map, editorial and linguistic revision of accompanying texts (or their translation into foreign languages) and DTP-processing of individual elements of the map composition.

Our verified methodology of map preparation gives us the possibility to implement the tasks from the small edition consisting of several copies printed by the ink-jet technology up to the large editions printed by off set printing technology. Maps and atlases are also published as electronic books of CD/DVD types or as a part of geo-databases operated on the map servers accessible through the Internet. Our digital maps are also used by navigation systems.

The use of digital processing, where each element of the map has accurately defined geographical position, enables us to transform the data projected on the map for the use in geographic information systems or as the basis for electronic or multimedia map systems.
