Geographic information systems and information technologies

Big majority of human activities, natural or artificial phenomena is directly or indirectly connected to its location, which is defined in the geographic space i.e. somewhere on the Earth surface. Contemporary information technologies have enabled us to „think spatially“, i.e.  in the connections exploring mutual spatial relations of objects and phenomena and to profit from understanding of the said connections  and relations. Geographic information systems as tools of acquiring, processing, analysis and presentation of spatial information provide opportunity of different views on the world and ongoing activities.  Currently, the use of geographic information systems is not limited only to the classical geo-scientific (geography, geology, geodesy, environment protection, hydrology, ...), or economic (agriculture, forest  management, water management, engineering networks administration, ...) disciplines but they started to penetrate into areas such as  financing, marketing and medicine.
